Empowering Educators to Transform Children’s Mental Wellbeing and Life Chances
Earlier this month, Future Action turned five.
The kind messages from strangers-turned-friends have really made me pause and reflect on the journey — and on how far we’ve come together.
Because Future Action didn’t begin in a boardroom or strategy session. It began as a response — to what I was seeing every day in my lessons.
💛 Why Future Action Exists
Over two decades teaching — including nine years at a school where there was a 13-year life expectancy gap, depending on which side of the main road students were born on — I saw first-hand how trauma, poverty, and social inequality shaped children's lives.

We served a community facing some of the deepest challenges in the country. And I watched young people’s mental health decline, year after year.
It became clear that we couldn’t wait for policy to catch up. We had to act. From 2016, we looked at the evidence base and then tried, tested, failed, and refined until we succeeded with strategies that consistently make a difference.
In 2020, with most of the world in lockdown, I launched Future Action — with one clear mission:
Empowering educators to transform children’s mental wellbeing and life chances.
🌍 From One Classroom to a Global Movement
What started as a response has grown into a movement — RISE Up — now embedded in over 250 schools and supporting more than 70,000 young people across the UK and internationally.
At its core, RISE Up is a trauma-informed, movement-led, early intervention wellbeing programme built by educators, for educators.
It’s grounded in four pillars proven to build mental fitness and reduce anxiety:
💛 Outstanding Relationships
🧠 Movement for Mental Wellbeing
🎲 Play Wrapped in Care
💪 Self-Care Wellbeing Toolkits
Through our educator training programmes, editable resources, and ongoing coaching, we help schools co-create bespoke programmes that reflect their unique challenges, culture, and priorities.
No two schools are the same — and neither are our solutions.
We don’t offer a sticking plaster.
We don’t impose a top-down model.
We partner with brilliant educators to build a sustainable, evidence-informed wellbeing approach that works in their setting.
🗣 “Before RISE Up, our students were anxious, disengaged, and overwhelmed. Now, they come to class smiling, moving, and believing in themselves again.”— PE Lead, Secondary School in Liverpool
It’s a way to close the wellbeing gap — tailored to each setting, designed to make a difference for every young person.
We are so proud of the brilliant educators we have partnered with and the impact they have created to support their young people. You can read their case studies and our impact reports here.
🧠 Where It All Began
One of the first pieces I ever wrote still shapes our approach today:👉 How to Support Young People Suffering from Trauma in PE

That blog laid the foundations for our Trauma Informed PE Teacher Training, which later grew into a wider RISE Up offer for early intervention and whole-school impact.
🚀 What’s Next?
The past five years have been energising, humbling, and transformative.
And while the movement has grown, our approach remains the same: Working with, not to — supporting educators to lead wellbeing transformation in their own communities.
